User Centered and Experiential Approaches to Designing Smart Assistive Technology

Presented by Sander van Berlo, Director at Onmi B.V., the Netherlands. Sander has extensive experience in the field of smart assistive technology. A short biography of Sander can be found below. In 2007 I started my bachelors degree at the Industrial design faculty at Eindhoven University of Technology. It took me 4 years to complete this degree. The curriculum at ID in Eindhoven is multidisciplinary and competency focussed. Assessment is done through project feedback and personal reflections presented in an online showcase. A lot of emphasis is placed on the development of your personal vision on design, and identity as designer. During my bachelors I did projects focussed on a range of topics: augmented reality, supporting caretakers, improving the learning process of young tennis players and improving tooth brushing behaviour and more. I also did two internships, one as research assistant in UNIST university in South Korea and on at Philips in Eindhoven. After graduating I took a year off in Australia where I tutored Visual Representation at the University of Canberra for a semester. I then went back to Eindhoven in 2012 to start my Masters degree. During these two years I became more self aware: I was able to define my vision on design and became comfortable with my identity as designer. My favourite projects from these two years focussed on health care topics: rehabilitation for stroke patients, and cardiovascular disease management. The result of my graduation project is a e-health ecosystem that combines behavioural measurement with behavioural change methods to support the adaptation of healthy lifestyles for cardiovascular patients, specifically reducing the sodium intake. Based on the outcome I have now started a design studio called Onmi which is developing this concept further in a consortium of 11 European and Taiwanese companies. The project is funded by the European Commission and will take 3 years.
